Last Thursday (06), the took a significant step by approving a bill that allocates 2% of the resources from the National Urban Housing Program to the regularization of favelas and squatter areas in large cities. This proposal, which had already passed through the Chamber of Deputies, now awaits the sanction of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Representative Soraia Santos, responsible for authoring the project, highlighted that the Minha Casa Minha Vida program did not include land regularization, which resulted in an inadequate allocation of resources to these needy areas.

The project approved by the Senate includes essential measures, such as guaranteeing technical and financial support for regularization actions, in addition to prohibiting the contingency of these resources. However, for residents to enjoy the benefits of the program, the federal government still needs to establish membership rules. In this sense, presidential sanction is a crucial step for the project to come into force and the measures approved by the are effectively implemented.
