The Federal Audit Court (TCU) filed a case regarding the former president’s expenses Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and his wife, the former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL)on trips made in 2022, during the election period.
The action was opened by deputy Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE), who accused the former president of making irregular use of public resources in electoral campaigns, in agendas for the bicentenary of Brazil’s Independence, the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the Assembly -General of the United Nations.
The case’s rapporteur, minister Antônio Anastasia, concluded that there were no irregularities in the events questioned. The court’s analysis indicated that the expenses were within normal standards for official events, with no signs of electoral misuse or diversion of public resources.

In relation to the bicentenary of Independence, Anastasia noted that “the values of expenses allocated to holding Independence celebration events in 2022 do not present any discrepancy when compared with the events held in different years, and the electoral issues arising from the programs were the subject of assessment by the Electoral Court”.
Regarding the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, the minister noted that, “from the examination of the travel reports sent by the Presidency of the Republic and other documents relating to the supply of funds, it was not possible to identify signs that there was willful non-compliance or gross error in the procedures relating to planning and execution of the displacement”.
Regarding the trip to the UN General Assembly, Anastasia highlighted that, “historically, the President of the Republic speaks at the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, and there are no discrepancies in the records between the procedures envisaged for carrying out international trips and those carried out for the presidential trip to New York in 2022.”
