The deputy (PP-RJ) organizes a meeting of mayors of Rio de Janeiro with the president (PT) on Monday (Dec 9, 2024) to pressure the federal government to move forward with the work to complete the Angra 3 nuclear plant .
The idea is to hold the meeting 1 day before the meeting of the (National Energy Policy Council) scheduled for Tuesday (Dec 10). The meeting that will bring together Lula and several federal government ministers will discuss whether the project will be continued or whether the work will no longer be part of the Executive’s plans.
O Poder360 found that the congressman invited the mayor of Rio de Janeiro (PSD), who has a good relationship with Lula. Other mayors in the state were also called. When contacted, Planalto did not confirm the agenda.
According to Lopes, the continuation of the Angra 3 works will bring an immediate impact of R$150 million to the State, in addition to the generation of around 11,000 jobs. On Tuesday (Dec 6), Lopes that Brazilians should “to pray” so that the government can decide whether to move forward with the project.
Despite the positive impact on the State’s accounts, the federal government estimates a billion-dollar impact on the Union’s coffers in 2 scenarios: both in continuation and with withdrawal.
The (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) has already estimated that the completion of Angra 3 should cost around R$23 billion. On the other hand, the cost to give up on the project is also billions of dollars – around R$21 billion. In total, Brazil has already contributed R$12 billion to the plant, which began to be built in the 1980s.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, has already shown himself in favor of completing the nuclear plant and should be a voice in favor of the continuation of the project at the CNPE. However, the amounts needed to complete the project scare the government.
