At 35 years old, Everton Ribeiro knows the weight of playing in the Libertadores. Champion in 2019 and 2022, with Flamengo, the midfielder wants to have the chance to compete in the tournament again, now wearing the Bahia shirt.
To achieve the feat, the Squadron will have to leave behind the bad phase they are experiencing in the second round of the Brasileirão and beat Atlético-GO, this Sunday (8), at Fonte Nova, in the last round of Series A. The result guarantees the tricolor in international competition without the need to worry about your opponents.
“It’s good pressure. Anyone who plays in a big team, like Bahia, has to know how to withstand it. It’s about focusing on the game, doing your best, helping your teammate. We have this good opportunity and we can’t let it pass,” said Everton, during interview at CT Evaristo de Macedo.
During the season, Bahia never hid the fact that a place in the Libertadores is the club’s main objective in 2024. After a practically perfect first round, the team fluctuated in the second half of Series A and put the classification at risk. Now, the squad has the chance to make their dream come true and avoid a frustrating end to the year for the tricolors.
“Our team is very focused, we know our responsibility, a good responsibility, to be able to bring this story to our side. Mark a very big page in the history of this great club that is Bahia. We will do everything, until the last sweat, to celebrate with our fans at the end of the game”, added Everton.
If they qualify, Bahia will break a 35-year fast. The last time he competed in the Libertadores was in 1989, after winning his second Brazilian championship.
That year, the tricolor led its group and only stopped in the quarter-finals, a campaign that is still the best among clubs in the Northeast. According to calculations by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Tricolor’s chances of returning to compete in the tournament in 2025 are 86%.
