The federal government is betting on a package of measures at the end of the year for the (Landless Rural Workers Movement), in the midst of . They involve settling families and releasing resources for production and technical assistance.
By the end of the government, the expectation of the Minister (Agrarian Development) is to settle 60 thousand families out of the 100 thousand currently camped, according to the registry of the (National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform). The MST has been asking for Teixeira’s head, who prefers not to debate the movement.
The settler government entered into a partnership with universities and federal institutes to help provide technical assistance to farmers.
In addition, it invested R$387 million in land purchases and, on November 27th, published an ordinance defining a value of up to R$700 million for the award of rural properties belonging to debtors to the Union under the Terra da Gente program.
“All these actions came together to be carried out in December of this year and January 2025”, says the minister. “Everything is going to the streets now. So we will have a high volume of deliveries, with a package of measures made possible.”
The minister says that dialogue with the MST and other social movements has always been maintained and assesses that the results compiled at the end of the year and beginning of 2025 will respond to the groups’ demands. “What matters is the government’s ability to deliver.”
Since the beginning of the Lula government, the MST has demonstrated dissatisfaction with the speed of the agrarian reform processes, demanding more settlements and conditions for camped families. The movement says that there has been no progress on the issue for more than ten years.
