The President of Syria Bashar al-Assad and members of his family are in Moscow after Russia granted them asylum. The news was reported by several state news agencies which cite unnamed Kremlin sources.
“Assad and members of his family arrived in Moscow. Russia, for humanitarian reasons, decided to grant them asylum,” said the Russian agencies Interfax, TASS and Ria Novosti.
The deposed President abandoned to Syria, aboard a cargo plane, in the early hours of this Sunday. The aircraft disappeared from radar shortly after taking off and nothing was known about Assad’s whereabouts for hours.
Bashar al-Assad took power in Syria 24 years old. The regime he led was accused of repeated human rights violations and the use of chemical weapons. The country has been in civil war since 2011.
