Basic setup is boring
“Sometimes I take selfies, other times anything that interests me. I already have a lot of photos in my gallery and I’m thinking of buying a bigger memory card,” says the brunette. Not only Vlaďka liked taking photos with a mobile phone, but the majority of Czechs. According to a survey, four out of five of our compatriots take 53 photos and make several videos a month…
Today, photos from a phone have a relatively decent quality and are often even more pleasing than those from a camera. “It’s due to the fact that the image is already basically edited on the mobile phone. The phone will focus on the object and adjust the color, saturation, etc. accordingly. The resulting images can look perfect, but sometimes they can look too unnatural.”
Quick photos to send
The advantage of taking pictures from a mobile phone is also the fact that the picture taken can then be automatically sent somewhere – either to a message or to a social network. “Photography with phones has one disadvantage, and that is the size of sensors and lenses. With them, the bigger they are, the more light they let in and the photo can be worked on better (for example, to blur the background), but the smaller they are, the result is worse,” says the expert, adding a few tips on how to take photos with a mobile phone so that the images the best.
Set the camera in your mobile phone
“Before you even start taking pictures, set up your camera. Some manufacturers have a preset aspect ratio of 16:9 or even 21:9, so it happens that the photo looks great on the display, but if you wanted to print it, then you have to crop it to print size. And that’s a shame,” warns the expert. It is therefore ideal that you set the aspect ratio to 4:3, which will make full use of the camera’s sensor.
Adjust the resolution
Their resolution is also important for the quality of the photos. “Mostly it’s around 12 Mpix, which is enough,” says the expert, continuing: “Of course, there are phones on the market that have a resolution of 108 or 200 Mpix, which is completely unnecessary, because such giant images take up a lot of your data.” Some phones have a so-called RAW format for photography, which can only be used if you want to edit the photo in various programs. If you do not intend to do this, it is better to take photos in the classic JPG format.
Enjoy the modes
Whatever smartphone you have, it will not lack the so-called standard mode. This is a common setting where the phone itself recognizes what you are photographing and adjusts the values accordingly. Don’t expect an artistic miracle, but a standard photo. If your phone has more than one lens, it will definitely have a so-called portrait mode in the menu.
In this mode, the camera itself measures the distance of the main object in the photo and blurs the rest of the background. That makes the portrait more interesting. Another feature of smartphone cameras is the panoramic mode. “It is suitable for taking pictures of landscapes or some kind of panorama. But in no case do not take pictures of anything moving with it! The result would disappoint you,” warns the expert.
Don’t be afraid of the extreme
In some phones, you can also come across a macro mode, which is suitable for taking pictures of objects in greater detail (for example, flowers, bugs, leaves). The photo is sharper and can capture even the smallest details. Do you like to take pictures at night or in semi-darkness? Then choose the mode with the crescent moon icon, which prepares your camera for taking pictures in different lighting conditions.
Stand steady!
It is not only the equipment of the mobile camera that is important, but also the way in which you take the photo. Experts recommend standing with your legs apart, your elbows resting on your body and your phone propped up. This stance creates stability that won’t shake your hands, so the photo won’t be out of focus.
