Syrian rebels enter Damascus and al-Assad’s status is uncertain

Syrian rebels opposing the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, 59 years old, said this Sunday (Dec 8, 2024) that they entered the capital Damascus, according to information from news agencies.

A Reuters that the Syrian Army command informed the government that the al-Assad regime “he finished”. According to , Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said he was willing to hand over power to a transitional government.

“We are ready to cooperate with whoever is the leader chosen by the population”al-Jalali said in a video sent to journalists. “I hope all Syrians think rationally about their country’s interests.”

It is not yet known who Bashar al-Assad’s wall is. Preliminary information indicates that he left the capital Damascus on board a plane. The flight’s destination, however, is uncertain.

Data from , which monitors flights, indicates that an Ilyushin Il-76 model plane took off from the Syrian capital at around 11pm on Saturday, December 7th Brasília time. The route is irregular (see the image below). The aircraft disappeared from the Flight Radar system at 11:40 pm (Brasília time).

It is not possible to say whether al-Assad was on board or what happened to the plane.
