In all Slovak mountains, there is a small avalanche danger corresponding to the first level of the international five-part scale above the forest zone on Sunday. The Avalanche Prevention Center of the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) in Liptovský Hrádek informed about it.
Avalanche danger is local and refers to isolated places where snow is deposited in the form of smaller snow slabs and pillows. Such places are mainly on the leeward sides ridges, peaks and terrain obstacles. The release of smaller avalanches is possible only with a large additional load, their danger lies mainly in the victim being dragged into exposed or rocky terrain.
“The total snow cover on the mountains is below average, usually reaching only ten to 40 centimeters. It is most abundant above the forest belt and on the leeward slopes of northern exposures. It is also possible to find smaller slabs and snow pillows made of more recent drifted snow, which lie on a layer of older frozen snow at higher altitudes. In the lower and middle areas, new snow is found on grassy ground. Due to the strong wind, the snow cover is irregularly distributed,” informs HZS.
