The decision by the President of the European Commission, , to travel to the European Union summit with , in Uruguay, had been taken since Friday last week (29).
It was kept confidential, however, so as not to “cause a stir”, as a diplomatic source told the Panel. The objective was not to harm the final stretch of negotiations between the two blocs.
The expectation of negotiators on both sides is at the meeting, this Friday (6). An initial version of the agreement was signed in 2019, during the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, but the negotiation was reopened by Lula.
The impetus for the revised agreement was given at the European Union’s summit with Celac, a community of Latin American and Caribbean countries, in Brussels last year.
Brazil bet on Von der Leyen’s ability to fund the agreement despite the opposition of influential members, such as France and Poland.
In the evaluation of Brazilian diplomacy, the Europeans’ fear of losing relevance to Asia in the Brazilian trade agenda also weighed.
