Would you like to cook something truly exclusive at home one day and are you thinking about the best ingredients? If you get them, you will have to dig very deep into your pocket. For example, such Kobe beef from the Japanese Wagyu breed costs from six to several tens of thousands of crowns per kilo…
Why are the prices of some foods so high that only the really rich can afford to buy them? In some, the rarity of the product is reflected due to the demanding nature of its production or agricultural production, while other raw materials are so scarce that they are really intended only for the chosen ones.
Such foods then become a symbol of wealth for those who can afford them. Nevertheless, most of us long to taste a piece of them at least once.

Kobe from Japan
Already mentioned in the introduction, the Kobe meat, which comes from the Japanese breed of Wagyu cattle (this meat is also sometimes referred to as such in our region), is not at all easy to obtain. In addition to the specific breed and the specific area of its breeding in Hyogo Prefecture, it is also about the special feed with which the cattle are supplied.
A cheaper option can be meat from animals raised outside this area. But the Japanese themselves do not like to see this very much, it is after all their national wealth – moreover, it is not actually Kobe meat in the true sense of the word.
Anyway, if we were to decide to invest once in a lifetime in a truly impressive culinary experience, the finely marbled Kobe is the right choice. But it will always be better if it is prepared by a real expert.
Civet or elephant coffee?
Would you like some special coffee after a delicious lunch and decided not to skimp on it either? You can order so-called civet coffee from real specialists, but Kopi Luwak will sound better.
It will be necessary to get rid of the idea that every grain of it has passed through the digestive tract of a civet before being ground, which is a small animal that likes to enjoy this crop. But you may be surprised that in the twenty-first century, the price of this coffee has been surpassed by Black Ivory.
It also has to pass through animal intestines before further processing, but this time it is a much larger creature, even the largest on land – that is, an elephant. You would have to pay around fifty thousand crowns for a kilogram of this coffee.
Luxury mushrooms
What else could be a symbol of luxury than white truffles? These mushrooms have such a strong special taste that it is possible to use them in the preparation of dishes only in really minimal quantities, and you cannot ignore their taste anyway. Pasta, scrambled eggs or even risotto get a completely different dimension with a few truffle flakes. However, you will also pay extra for it in the best restaurants.
An ordinary watermelon? Not at all!
Perhaps you are more of a vegetable lover and would like to try something truly unique in this area as well. Then you can try to get one of the ten thousand pieces of Densuke melon grown every year.
What makes this green ball so specific? As with Kobe meat, it is a Japanese product, this time from the island of Hokkaido. The lava surface of the island guarantees special conditions for the growth and ripening of these melons, which then acquire such a unique taste that it is possible to buy them at a price of around six thousand crowns per kilo. But if you visited an auction where the best pieces are sold, you probably wouldn’t be able to get well over a hundred thousand…
Caviar worth millions
Caviar – we must not forget about it in the list of the most expensive foods in the world, if only because its price usually surpasses everything else that we could think of. After all, a kilogram of albino sturgeon caviar, the so-called white caviar, can cost up to 1.7 million crowns.
And that’s really a lot. The price corresponds to the amount that can be obtained, because albinism cannot be “programmed” and it is therefore a matter of chance whether such a fish appears or not.
Like saffron…
Finally, we can look into the world of spices and various ingredients. It will certainly not surprise anyone that saffron is at the top of the rarities here. It is sold in milligrams and there is nothing to be surprised about, because it is the tips (delicate parts of the flower) of crocuses and if we wanted to get a kilogram of this spice, we would have to process 150,000 of these flowers. The price of such a quantity ranges over one hundred thousand crowns on world markets.
Are you still considering committing a paycheck to such an experience? It’s up to the preferences of each of us, but you certainly wouldn’t regret it.
