Company wants to repeat Ceará biomethane project in Amazonas

Marquise Ambiental built an alternative to a landfill and aims to produce gas; Manaus city hall does not confirm partnership

The company wants to take its biomethane production from solid waste to Amazonas, which began in Ceará in May 2024. The company built a waste treatment center about 40 km from Manaus to accommodate the waste that is currently deposited in landfills in the capital of Amazonas and, at the same time, use the waste to produce gas that can be injected into the city’s distribution network.

The company plans to obtain the same license from the (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels) to operate the project in the region and negotiate with the (Companhia de Gás do Amazonas) the supply of biomethane in around 2 years from the start of treatment center operations. The obstacle at the moment is negotiating waste collection with Manaus City Hall.

To the Poder360the CEO of Marquise Ambiental and advisor to the (Brazilian Waste and Environment Association), Hugo Nery, said that the enterprise is capable of receiving waste from the entire metropolitan region of Manaus and up to a radius of 100 km from the capital . The estimate is that the project will be capable of processing 70% of the State’s waste in a sustainable way. The construction of the project took around 15 years, of which 13 were spent obtaining all the necessary licenses.

Despite the advantages of the process, the cost of making waste transshipment viable prevents an agreement with the city hall. According to Nery, Marquise can make the logistics operation viable, but this would bring an estimated cost of around R$50 million per year to public coffers.

“Eu I fully understand the vision of the public manager, I understand his concern In terms of cost, I understand all this, but I understand that the fact that you have one today equipment whose technology world is one of generation future value. The fact that you have an additional transshipment cost is the reality of all the big cities. You can no longer more land for construction treatment centers within an urban area”said Nery.

Another factor that hinders the progress of the operation is that the (Court of Justice of Amazonas) extended the operating deadline for the Manaus landfill until April 2028, even with an opinion from the (Institute of Environmental Protection of Amazonas) that pointed to a inadequate treatment of waste in the landfill. Before the extension, the estimated useful life of the landfill was until January 2024. Here is the Ipaam report (PDF – 4 MB).

To the Poder360, the (Municipal Secretariat for Urban Cleaning) of Manaus City Hall said that there is still no partnership with Marquise Ambiental for the use of the waste treatment and biomethane production center.
