A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck about 9 km southwest of La Union in El Salvador, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said on Sunday night (8).
Salvadoran civil protection authorities said they activated emergency protocols for the earthquake, which was felt as far north as Tegucigalpa, the capital of neighboring Honduras, and as far east as Nicaragua.
The EMSC, which revised the magnitude upward from an initial estimate of 5.4, reported a magnitude 4.4 aftershock about seven minutes later.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
