British comedian David Walliams (53) suffered from depression in his youth. So serious that one Christmas, when he returned home from university, he tried to take his own life. That’s how his mother found him.

“The burden of my depression became unbearable. From an early age I knew something was wrong, a feeling of unbearable loneliness that I couldn’t escape. During the first Christmas after returning from university, despair came over me and I could no longer live with it. My mom found me lying lifeless on the bed because I had overdosed. It broke her heart. She cried for weeks. I’m ashamed that I was so selfish and put her through it, but her boundless love got me through it,” David paid tribute to Kathleen’s mother in an interview with The Times.

He added that his mother has always supported him in his comedy career, while father Peter was more skeptical of him making it in the big competition. Walliams has already mentioned depression in the past, he also writes about it in his book. But he disclosed the suicide for the first time.
