UN Secretary General António Guterres on Sunday welcomed the end of the “dictatorial regime” in Syria and called for the country to rebuild after the sudden fall of President Bashar al-Assad. TASR informs according to the report of the AFP agency.

“After 14 years of brutal war and the fall of a dictatorial regime, today the people of Syria can seize a historic opportunity to build a stable and peaceful future.” Guterres said in a statement. “I call once again for calm and the avoidance of violence in this sensitive period and at the same time for the protection of the rights of all Syrians without distinction,” the UN chief concluded.

On Sunday, the Syrian rebels managed to capture the capital Damascus and overthrow President Assad, who fled the country to Russia, which granted him asylum. The offensive was launched by rebel groups only last week.
