Uruguayan striker Facundo Torres, 24 years old, was wanted by Palmeiras and could be the team’s first reinforcement for the 2025 season. This name is not one of the best known among Brazilian fans, but the player, who currently defends Orlando City, from United States, is relevant in Uruguay and has been called up by the national team.
In MLS, the American football league, Torres is a success, as his 2024 numbers show. There were 20 goals and six assists in 44 games. Since arriving in Miami, he has scored 47 goals and 19 assists in 123 games. Before that, he only played for Peñarol, the club for which he was formed. During his youth years, he played alongside Federico Valverde, now a Real Madrid star.
If he reinforces Palmeiras, the Uruguayan can face an opponent he has already caused hell in the past, Corinthians, the Palmeiras’ great rival. He participated in two duels with the Corinthians in the group stage of the 2021 Copa Sudamericana and won both.
Although he did not score a goal in any of the matches, Torres was a starter and gave a lot of work to the Corinthians defense, giving Fagner a lot of work, especially in the first game, won 2-0 by Peñarol at the Neo Química Arena.
In Montevideo, the Uruguayans thrashed the São Paulo team 4-0, with another good performance from Torres, who dominated the midfield sector and participated in the second goal. The result determined Corinthians’ early elimination from the continental tournament.
His prominence for the clubs he defended made Facundo Torres a frequent name in call-ups for the Uruguayan national team, but he never had many opportunities as a starter. In any case, he played matches at the 2021 Copa América, in Brazil, coming off the bench. In 2024, he was called up for qualifiers and played against Ecuador, Paraguay, Bolivia and Venezuela.
