Acts emptied across the country call for Bolsonaro’s arrest – 12/10/2024 – Power

Protesters demonstrated in several cities this Tuesday (10) in response to the arrest of the former president (PL) and in repudiation of the amnesty for those involved in the and other attacks on democracy. Called by social movements and left-wing parties, the protests had a small audience.

In , a group gathered in front of Masp, on Avenida Paulista, in the late afternoon. It rained at times. , remembering that the event would take place during the week and at the end of the year, but they preach that it is important to keep the matter in the spotlight.

The date was chosen because it is International Human Rights Day. The protests, following the indictment by the Federal Police of Bolsonaro and 36 other people, in the investigation into the coup plot following the president’s electoral victory () in 2022.

The group on Avenida Paulista marched towards Rua da Consolação, but one lane remained open for traffic, which was not stopped.

Under the central motto “No amnesty! Prison for the coup plotters!”, the mobilizations incorporated other banners in an effort to attract the public. Among them were the end of , and the defense of legal abortion, in repudiation of .

In the capital of São Paulo, posters were also displayed against police violence, at a time when the government (Republicans), an ally of Bolsonaro, is facing violence after reports of abuses by military police officers came to light. Protesters called for an end to the massacres and genocide of black youth.

Brasília, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte were other capitals in which groups met. A preview released the day before by the organization pointed out 42 cities across the country with scheduled mobilizations and also a protest in Italy.

The call was drawn by the fronts and , which bring together social and collective movements. Organizations such as (Central Única dos Trabalhadores), , , and .

Flags of PT, PSOL, PC do B and UP were waved in concentrations across the country. When endorsing the acts, the PT published that it was “calling on all defenders of democracy to take to the streets to demand punishment for the criminal organization led by Bolsonaro.”
