Ally of the president (PT) and member of the government base, deputy Duarte Jr. (PSB-MA) described those presented by the minister (Finance) to improve public accounts as a “package of evil” and began collecting signatures to change the proposal.

The four amendments that the deputy wants to present seek to suppress changes in the .

The changes in the benefit are among the biggest points of resistance in Congress to the measures proposed by the economic team, to the point that the executive secretary of , Dario Durigan, .

By , the program will be aimed at people who are unable to live independently and work. Today, the benefit is paid to elderly people over 65 years of age and people with disabilities who are members of low-income families.

Duarte Jr. wants to return to the original concept of people with disabilities to ensure that access to the BPC “is based on fair and inclusive criteria”, “avoiding the exclusion of those who need it most.”

It also proposes reviewing the concept of family in granting the benefit. One of the measures in the package expands this concept.

Therefore, the income of the spouse or partner, even if they do not live with the person, would count towards the release of the benefit. On the other hand, the income of siblings, children and stepchildren, whether single or married, would also be included in the calculation, as long as they live in the same place as the person who requested the benefit.

The deputy wants to suppress this proposal for new cohabitation criteria “to prevent program beneficiaries from being harmed.”

The pessebista also says he wants to protect the right of more than one person from the same family to have access to the BPC, revoking the provision that limits the benefit to just one family member, disregarding individual needs.

Finally, it talks about eliminating asset limits for granting the benefit, rejecting the section that imposes property barriers, “which harms families who, even in a vulnerable situation, have low-value assets.”

“I support the need to promote a cut in spending to balance public accounts. But this must be done looking at the top floor”, argues the deputy.

“Cutting spending targeting the most vulnerable people is making public policy looking only at numbers. We don’t agree with that. We are dealing with suffering people who need to be assisted by public authorities. We will fight against the withdrawal of rights from those most in need.”
