The Foreign Relations and National Defense Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved a project, this Wednesday (11), to revoke a decree by Lula (PT) that granted tribute to the then dictator of Syria, . The proposal still needs to be validated by the plenary.
The decree of July 12, 2010, granted during the second term of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, gave the then Syrian leader the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, a decoration given to foreign personalities by the President of Brazil.
Assad was deposed by Syrian rebels, who announced on Sunday in an early televised statement the overthrow of the dictator’s 24-year rule, adding that all prisoners had been released.
The request to revoke the decree dates back to 2018, authored by deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante (DEM-RJ), but was only approved by the committees this Wednesday.
In his justification, the author of the project pointed out the dictatorial nature of the management of requesting the revocation of the honor.
In the request, the project’s rapporteur, deputy Rodrigo Valadares (União-SE), lists the accusations against Assad, such as crimes against humanity, use of chemical weapons, torture, deaths and disappearance of thousands of people, including women and children .
Also in the document, it is said that the National Order of the Southern Cross is intended for foreign individuals or legal entities who have become worthy of the recognition of the Brazilian Nation, “something that, undoubtedly, is not the case of the Syrian dictator Bashar al- Assad, since he is an internationally recognized figure as a tyrant and war criminal, even at the time he was granted the honor”, says an excerpt.
“It is public knowledge that the recipient, Bashar al-Assad, has held the presidency of Syria in a dictatorial manner since July 2000, having succeeded his father, Hafez al-Assad, another tyrant who ruled that country for three decades, until his death in that year Since then, Bashar al-Assad has remained in power, through a brutal repressive system, being re-elected in electoral processes where he ran unopposed, and whose fairness is questioned both within. your country and by international organizations.”
Finally, the justification also mentions the “undignified and criminal conduct of the Syrian tyrant towards the people of his own country and the international community”.
