At least 104 reporters were murdered around the world in 2024, of which more than half (55) in the Gaza Strip, according to a report by the IFJ (International Federation of Journalists) published this Tuesday (10). Of the total, 92 were men and 12 were women. Last year, there were 129 victims in total.
Regarding the concentration of deaths in the Palestinian territory, IJF Secretary General Anthony Bellanger said that “the massacre that is taking place before the eyes of the entire world in Palestine”.
Since October 7, 2023, when members of the terrorist group Hamas carried out attacks on Israeli territory, the number of Palestinian journalists murdered has reached at least 138, according to the Federation.
After the Middle East, the second most dangerous region for journalists is Asia-Pacific, with 20 press professionals killed, with six murders in Pakistan, five in Bangladesh and three in India. In Europe, the Ukrainian War is the cause of victims on the continent, with four journalists murdered in 2024, compared to 13 in 2022 and four in 2023.
The IFJ also recorded 513 journalists arrested worldwide, a sharp increase compared to 2023 (427) and 2022 (375). “With 135 journalists imprisoned, China – including Hong Kong – remains the world’s largest prison for media professionals,” the report said.
Meanwhile, the war in Gaza continues. Attacks attributed to Tel Aviv across Palestinian territory killed at least 34 people between Monday night (9) and Tuesday morning (10), according to doctors, while Israeli tanks advanced in areas in the central and southern parts.
