Malibu, California (Reuters) – A rapidly intensifying wildfire burning northwest of Los Angeles has forced some Malibu residents to evacuate, threatening homes, knocking out power and closing roads there.

The fire grew overnight from two acres to more than 1,000 acres across steep mountainous terrain, spreading south over the Pacific Coast Highway in the picturesque coastal town of about 10,000 people.

The fire, which was 0% contained on Tuesday, destroyed a small number of homes but did not cause any injuries or deaths, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said at a news conference.

“We will have a coordinated ground and air attack,” Marrone said, noting that 300 additional firefighters will join the 700 already fighting the fire. “Due to the difficulties in this particular area, time is of the essence so we can control this fire.”

The cause of the fire remains unknown, Marrone said.

Burnt houses burned this Tuesday, while aircraft dropped water on burning vegetation.

“I was going back to check out their houses and I was really thinking it wouldn’t be a big deal,” said Malibu resident Fred Roberts. “But after I saw this and that fire. I know this is for real. And it was very strong here.”

Authorities went door to door overnight to warn thousands of residents and closed roads as the fire grew.
