Italian club accelerates the process of revitalizing the arena, with a modernization plan aimed at attracting major events
Lazio intensified efforts to renovate the Flaminio Stadium, in Rome, Italy, with the presentation of a preliminary feasibility study scheduled for December 15, at 10 am, at the Capitol. The club’s president, Claudio Lotito, who had initially set a more distant date, decided to bring forward the process to speed up the revitalization of the stadium. The information was released on Tuesday (Dec 10, 2024)
The renovation project, which aims to transform the area into a modern, multifunctional center, faced resistance from the Music for Rome Foundation, responsible for the neighboring auditorium. Despite this, Lotito reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the site’s historical heritage, highlighting his collaboration with conservationists to ensure that urban planning and architectural requirements are met.
“We are working on a project that preserves the history of Flaminio and at the same time offers an innovative space for Rome”said the president from Lazio.
The stadium needs to overcome several regulatory hurdles, including approval from bodies such as Soprintendenza (responsible for the protection of cultural heritage) and municipal authorities. Lazio has the support of new legislation that promises to simplify administrative processes for the modernization of stadiums in Italy.
The legal reform includes economic incentives and a national fund, which could speed up bureaucratic procedures that often delay projects of this type in the country.
The objective of the plan is not only to renovate the stadium, but also to revitalize a central region of Rome, attracting tourists and generating a positive impact on the local economy. The project, which has a partnership between universities and the Nervi family, also aims to improve the area’s infrastructure, with improvements in transport and parking, in addition to increasing the region’s real estate value.
Furthermore, Lazio sees the new stadium as an opportunity to overcome financial challenges and position itself among the biggest clubs in Europe. The new stadium, with capacity for 45,000 to 49,000 spectators, will have a retractable roof, a unique feature for hosting cultural and musical events, whilst also ensuring comfort for football fans.
Lazio has signed a partnership with the company Legends, which will play an important role in managing the stadium. Legends, one of the main stadium operators in the world, will be responsible for ticket sales, merchandising and sponsorships. The renovation project has an estimated cost of 250 to 300 million euros and was inspired by the modern approach of stadiums such as Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu.
