Satellites catch the Russians moving their fearsome bombings: analysts look for what caused them

The Engels-2 air baselocated in the Saratov Oblast, more than 600 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, has recently attracted the attention of international analysts following the appearance of new Su-34 tactical bombers parked at its facilities.

Satellite photographs taken on December 7 and shared by the OSINT researcher known as MT Anderson on platform nine of these aircraft at the base, a location not previously associated with this type of aircraft.

A strategic move by the Russian command

The sudden concentration of Su-34 and other aircraft at Engels-2 suggests a strategic response of the Russian military command to recent threats. Analysts believe that this decision could be related to the transfer of ATACMS ballistic missiles by the US to Ukraine. These missiles have a range of up to 300 kilometers and use precise guidance combining satellite and inertial navigation, posing a significant risk to Russian military positions and assets.

The location of Engels-2 provides a strategic advantagesince it is out of reach not only of conventional artillery Ukrainian, but also of a large number of drones and long-range weapons used in the conflict. This factor makes the base a key point for Russian air operations far from the front lines.

The role of the Su-34 in the conflict

The Su-34 plays a highlighted paper in the war in Ukraine. This tactical bomber has been used by Russian forces to transport and drop KAB, gliding bombs that have wreaked havoc on Ukrainian positions. Additionally, the Su-34 is equipped with a 30 mm GSz-30-1 cannon and has 12 pylons capable of transport missiles such as the S8, the Ch-25 or the Raduga Ch-59as well as additional bombs, with a total load capacity of up to 8 tons of weapons.

The performance of the Su-34 is also notable. can reach speeds of approximately 1,900 km/h y operate at altitudes up to 17 kilometerswhich allows it to carry out missions at great distances and in relative safety against enemy air defenses.
