The gatherings of opponents of the government have been going on for 13 days. Several hundred people, including opposition politicians, have been detained over the past two weeks. After being released, some of the detainees reported that they had been subjected to police violence.

In the upcoming presidential elections, the head of state will be elected for the first time by the parliament together with voters delegated from the regions. The Georgian dream has a majority in the parliament. He nominated former football representative Micheil Kavelashvili as his presidential candidate.

President Zurabišvili, who supports Georgia’s accession to the EU, has declared that she wants to remain in office even after the end of her mandate, which is in the middle of December. She stated that the current parliament is illegitimate and therefore cannot elect the head of state.
