Sugar beet
Of course, we can’t be talking about any other vegetable than sugar beet. This is because it belongs to the traditional crops that are grown right here in the Czech Republic. And it was originally very complicated in terms of manual work, as it was densely planted and hoeing and uniting took place at the same time.
Our ancestors really worked hard. Fortunately, manual work has already disappeared today, as monocot varieties have begun to be sown. Sugar beet is a biennial plant, but paradoxically it is cultivated only one year. This is so that it does not bloom, as the flower is unnecessary for this vegetable.
Sugar beet has been cultivated since ancient times, but as far as its processing is concerned, as we know it today, people only got around to it about 200 years ago. Before, it was used as fodder and no one knew about its sweet taste. It was only during the Napoleonic Wars that the sugar industry developed greatly. And that’s when people realized that sugar beet is the perfect vegetable for sugar production.
How sugar beet is processed
So why is sugar beet the envy of the whole world? Because it produces the chemically purest sugar. But how does it work? Of course, the first thing to do is to sow the beets. After harvesting, it is important to wash the sugar beet first to get rid of all impurities.
It is then cut into narrow strips, cuttings, which are then placed in diffusers. There, the sugar is extracted from the beets with water at different temperatures. The famous chemically purest brown sugar is obtained from the obtained sugar juice after water evaporation.
