The head of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Mike Whitaker, will leave his post on January 20 when Donald Trump becomes president, according to an internal memo.
Whitaker, nominated by Joe Biden, is the latest air safety agency leader to serve a brief term, having served just over a year.
“You have seen leadership come and go – and through every transition you have kept air travel stable and safe,” the FAA chief said. Katie Thomson, Whitaker’s deputy, will leave the agency on January 10.
The FAA regulates aerospace manufacturers such as Boeing and airline safety, as well as operating the nation’s air traffic control system and civil airspace.
