The commentators of CNN Caio Coppolla and José Eduardo Cardozo discussed, this Thursday (12), in The Great Debate (Monday to Friday, at 11pm) whether President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) should hand over command of the Executive branch to Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB).

Lula has been admitted to Hospital Sírio-Libanês, in São Paulo, since the early hours of last Tuesday (10), when he had to undergo emergency surgery due to bruises that formed after a fall in October.

Since then, . However, he remains in office.

For Cardozo, if Lula feels well and in good condition, there is no reason to take a leave of absence.

“Based on what appears in the medical notes, he is in a conscious state of health, speaking. Which does not in itself justify a medical leave”, says Cardozo.

As for Coppolla, legally Lula should not be removed, but he disagrees with regards to the “political point of view” of the case.

“From a political point of view, it would be a disaster for Lula and the PT to pass the baton to Geraldo Alckmin. This would raise even more doubts, even more concerns about the viability of Lula’s candidacy for re-election in 2026,” said Coppolla.
