Abel Ferreira’s titles and achievements for Palmeiras speak for themselves. The Portuguese coach arrived in Brazil in October 2020 and, since then, has collected impressive records in charge of the Alviverde club. It is not surprising that the international market focuses its attention on the coach.

According to the Portuguese newspaper Record, Abel is the favorite to take over Sporting, from Portugal. Recently, the leader of the Portuguese Championship lost promising coach Rúben Amorim to Manchester United. João Pereira, who commanded Sporting’s B team, was appointed to the vacancy. However, even though the 40-year-old coach has signed until 2027, his permanence is uncertain and is even worse considering the Portuguese board’s interest in bringing Abel Ferreira back to Portugal.

The problem, however, is the figures. According to Record, the Palmeiras coach’s salary is at the level of Amorim at United. And it is not today that Abel is being considered for the position in question. The Alviverde coach even had his name investigated by Sporting’s board of directors at the time of hiring Rúben Amorim himself. It is worth mentioning that Abel has a considerable past with the club, as he played between 2006 and 2011 as a player and it was where he began his career as a coach.

Abel’s salary today would be unfeasible for Sporting. There are around 6 million euros per year (tax free), approximately R$37.7 million. Record also indicates that until this Saturday, the 14th, there had been no contact between the parties. It is also worth remembering that Abel is a priority for Leila Pereira, who was re-elected president of Palmeiras at the end of November.

In charge of Palmeiras, Abel wrote his name as one of the greatest coaches of all time. Since 2020, he has won at least 10 titles, with highlights being 2 Libertadores (2020 and 2021), 2 Brasileirãos (2022 and 2023) and 1 Copa do Brasil (2020). The team is still the current three-time champion of Paulistão (2022, 2023 and 2024)

Sporting is leader of the Portuguese Championship, with 11 wins and just 2 defeats. The team has 33 points and is threatened by Benfica and Porto, who have 31, in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.
