Bomb attack on festival leaves three dead and 48 injured in Thailand

An explosive device was thrown into the crowd during an outdoor performance.

At least three people died and 48 were injured, five of them seriously, due to an attack with an explosive thrown at a festival in northwestern Thailand, an emergency service said today.

Two people died at the scene, while another died in the hospital, where the injured were taken, including a 14-year-old minor.

Local police said at least 48 people were injured.

An explosive device was thrown, just before midnight on Friday (5pm in Lisbon), into a crowd during an outdoor performance at an annual festival in the town of Umphang, the Umphang Rescue Groups Association said.

The Amazing Land Doi Loi festival is organized by the Red Cross in Tak province, which borders Myanmar (formerly Burma).

Police arrested two young men they believe were linked to the attack, state television PBS said.

According to a Ministry of Defense spokesman, local police said there had been a fight between rival groups before the explosion.

Thanathip Sawangsang told the Associated Press that forensic evidence showed the explosive device was a homemade bomb.

Tak province has a strong military presence in border areas, including Umphang.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed condolences to the victims and their families and ordered security personnel and authorities in the region to investigate and help those affected, government spokesman Jirayu Houngsap said.
