Three boats got into trouble at about the same time off the coast of Gavdos Island.
At least one person died and 200 migrants were rescued in three separate operations in Greek waters overnight on Saturday, the Greek coast guard said. TASR informs according to the DPA agency.
Dozens of people are still missing after three boats ran into trouble at around the same time off the coast of the Greek island of Gavdos, south of Crete, the coast guard said.
There were 39 people on board the sunken boat
There were 39 people on board one wooden boat that sank. So far, one body has been found after the boat sank. Along with coast guard patrols, helicopters and an airplane were also involved in the search operation.
The rescued passengers said that there were probably dozens more people on board the boats, the Greek daily Kathimerini quoted.
Greek authorities are often involved in the rescue of migrants undertaking a dangerous journey from Turkey or Libya on overcrowded vessels that are not even seaworthy, DPA reminds.
According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), almost 58,000 migrants arrived in Greece this year. For comparison, in 2022 this number represented 49 thousand.
