The American President-elect, Donald Trumpwas this Thursday Person of the Year 2024 by Time magazine, which highlights his return to the White House after having been convicted by the courts.
The republican, protagonist of a “Impressive political return”wrote the magazine, when he won his first presidential election against Democrat and poll favorite Hillary Clinton.
“Today we are witnessing a resurgence of populismat a growing distrust in relation to the institutions that defined the last century and an erosion of the belief that progressive values will lead to better lives for the majority of people. Trump is simultaneously the agent and the beneficiary of all this”, writes Sam Jacobs, editor of the American magazine.
“For leading a historic comeback, for causing a unique political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and altering America’s role in the world, Donald Trump is Time magazine’s 2024 Person of the Year,” he concludes.
The editor also said that “there is always a heated debate” in the magazine about the distinction, “although I must admit that this year the decision was easier than in previous years.”
The magazine featured, in addition to Trump, his opponent in the presidential elections, Kamala Harris, but also Kate Middleton, Elon Musk, Yulia Navalnaya, Benjamin Netanyahu, Jerome Powell, Joe Rogan, Claudia Sheinbaum and Mark Zuckerberg.
Donald Trump is expected on Thursday at the New York Stock Exchange to symbolically ring the New York Stock Exchange bell.
Elected president and convicted in the same year
The Republican tycoon was the 47th President of the United States in the presidential elections on November 5, having surpassed the necessary 270 votes in the electoral college, and will take office on January 20, 2025.
At 78 years old, he is the oldest person to be elected to the Presidency of the United States of America and, when he takes office, he will be a few months older than his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, when he took office in 2020.
In May, a New York court jury found Donald Trump on all 34 counts of a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 presidential election by paying money to mute a pornographic actress which stated that the two had had sexual relations.
Trump is also the only President in United States history to face impeachment proceedings twice during his term. In both cases, he was acquitted by the Senate of all charges.
