Pro-Russian candidate Kavelashvili elected president of Georgia

On Saturday, an electoral committee elected ex-footballer Mikhail Kavelashvili (53) from the national conservative ruling party Georgian Dream as President of Georgia. He has been an MP since 2016 and was the only candidate. He is set to replace the pro-Western incumbent after major protests against the government last month over its abandonment of accession talks with the European Union.
