Decision by Minister Alexandre de Moraes cites the general as “a member of an articulated criminal group” that planned the coup
The (Federal Supreme Court) stated that the evidence found in the coup plans demonstrates “extreme dangerousness of the agents”. The Court also characterized the general (PL), who was this Saturday (Dec 14, 2024), as “an agent identified as a member of an articulated criminal group”. Here is the STF decision (PDF – 599 kB).
The former defense minister of the former president (PL) is the target of Operation Countercoup, which investigates the planning of a coup attempt and murder of the president (PT), vice president (PSB) and STF minister Alexandre de Moraes .
The soldier was arrested in the morning at his residence in Copacabana, a neighborhood in the south of Rio de Janeiro. He was taken to the Federal Police headquarters and then to Vila Militar, in the west of the capital. He will undergo a custody hearing at 2 pm via videoconference.
According to the PF report, Braga Netto would have participated in the following acts:
- He would have headed a supposed crisis office to be established after the execution of the coup plan in order to hold new elections;
- He would have approved the operational planning of the coup on November 12 (meeting at his residence);
- It would have articulated intelligence networks and communication strategies to gain national and international support;
- He would have been part of the Military Incitement and High Ranking and Support Officers groups;
- Coordinated illicit actions carried out by military personnel trained in Special Forces (“black kids”);
- He handed over money in a wine bag to finance the coup operations;
- He tried to obtain confidential data from the collaboration agreement of Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp;
- He took effective action in coordinating clandestine actions to try to arrest and execute Federal Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
