The Austrian government announced on Friday that it is offering Syrian refugees €1,000 to return to their homeland. where the long-time president Bashar Assad was overthrown last Sunday. TASR informs about it according to a Reuters report.

“Austria will support Syrians who want to return to their homeland with a return grant of 1,000 euros. This country now needs its citizens to flourish,” Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer wrote in English on the X social network.

It was not immediately clear how many Syrians could take advantage of the offer. Austrian Airlines some time ago suspended flights to the Middle East due to the unfavorable security situation, and the said contribution would appear to the Syrians it didn’t even fully cover the cost of the trip home. Reuters reports that one-way Turkish Airlines ticket from Vienna to Beirut, from where people heading to Damascus tend to continue their journey by land transport, will be released next month on at least 1066,10 eur.

Conservative Austrian Chancellor Nehammer reacted quickly to the changes in Syria; already on Monday he ordered the Ministry of the Interior to suspended the current processing of asylum applications from Syrians and reviewed all asylums granted so far. It has already suspended the granting of asylums to Syrians more than a dozen European countries.

However, deporting Syrians against their will is not possible until the situation in Syria becomes clearer. The Austrian government has so far announced that it will focus on voluntary returns. Syrians are the largest group of asylum seekers in Austria, and Nehammer, like many European conservative leaders, is under pressure from the influential far right on this issue.

The far-right Free Party of Austria (FPÖ) also won in September parliamentary electionsbut no party wanted to form a government with it. Nehammer is currently negotiating the formation of a new coalition on behalf of his own People’s Party (ÖVP)who finished second in the election, with third Social Democrats (SPÖ) and the fourth by the liberal NEOS party.
