The orchid will bloom before Christmas. All you have to do is do it

Winter is a resting period for many flowers — they then stop blooming, stop growing and absorb fewer nutrients. It is similar, but some species do not go dormant and after they bloom, you can use this trick and try to make them sprout new buds in winter.

Blooming orchids are a beautiful home decoration, but when they fade away and they stop putting out new buds, we start to worry. This is not always a cause for concern, some flowers go dormant in winter and need a “rest from blooming”. However, individual orchid species can produce buds all year round. If we have such an orchid at home, it is worth using the gardeners’ trick of cleaning the root system.

The secret of this method is to remove the orchid from the pot and carefully clean its roots, e.g. of soil remnants, then it is worth removing the dead roots. Small scissors and a brush with delicate bristles will work for this purpose. After cleaning the root system, place the flower in a vase (preferably glass), which should be half-filled with water. This will allow the orchid to come back to life, but like any other flower it needs light to bloomit is best to place it in the sunniest place in your house or apartment. We also need to remember to change the water regularly — preferably every 2 days — this type of treatment should be stopped when the first effects are seen. Then we pull the orchid out of the vase and put it in a pot. Importantly use a new substrate.

We recommend:

Orchids are divided into those with a distinct rest period and those that do not need it. In the case of the latter, if we notice that they stop blooming, we can try the trick of cleaning the root system.

Orchids that do not go dormant include:

  • falenopsisy (Falenopsis),
  • cymbidium (Cymbidium),
  • psychopsis (Psychopsis)
  • sabotki (Paphiopedilum),
  • species Epidendrum radicans,
  • some species of butterflies (Oncidium).

Especially the first two types are eagerly grown at home. These types of orchids can grow all year roundhowever, in winter this increase is often slightly smaller. Still, if they stop blooming altogether, this is something gardeners should use. When considering cleaning the root system of orchids, it is also worth knowing which plants will not be affected by the treatment because they have entered a dormant state that is important for their development.

Orchids that go dormant include:

  • noble dendrobium (Dendrobium nobile),
  • crested hood (Coelogyne cristata),
  • katleje (Cattleya),
  • Calanthes that shed their leaves (Calanthe).

In winter, these flowers need about 12 hours. sunlight. Sometimes it is worth considering illuminating flowers, but we must remember that orchids need both day and night for optimal growth. Therefore, if we use artificial lighting, we should not overdo it. Moreover, orchids are exotic flowers that do not tolerate winter very well, we should not expose them to temperature changes. They may also need less water in winter – it is worth paying attention to their roots and watering the flowers when they turn gray.
