Looking out the window, it’s clear why we want to spend the winter in warmth and swimwear. The solution could be the Caribbean or even Austria. At least for a while, we can warm up in thermal water full of minerals.

In the near and far surroundings, they literally built complexes on it that are synonymous with relaxation – with wellness services, saunas and pools, indoor and outdoor, where you can relax in hot water while looking at the amazing landscape.

Where can you find such places?

We have selected several thermal locations for you, among which there are modern complexes, traditions and untouched nature.

11. Gamla Laugin, Island

The secret lagoon. This is the name of the oldest natural hot springs in Iceland in Slovak. You can find them in the town of Flúðir, not far from the famous Golden Circle. Despite being close to the country’s biggest attraction, the springs attract fewer visitors than the already overcrowded Blue Lagoon. Although Gamla Laugin lacks a bar that you can swim up to, like Mývatn natural spas, it offers a calmer and more authentic experience.

It includes waters rich in minerals, heated to approximately 38 to 40 degrees. They come from nearby hot springs, from where steam rises. It will make you feel like you are on another planet. You can also enjoy it in the privacy of smaller pools and whirlpools. The picturesque setting and the geothermal area by the water are also a draw. There are bubbling small geysers around the lagoon, which you can explore along the walking trails.

There is also an opportunity to do so in winter, as the lagoon is open throughout the year. In the colder season, a visit is a magical experience, especially if you manage to catch a glimpse of the northern lights in the hot springs.

10. Pozar, Greece

Greece is mainly a summer destination for us, and we are not very tempted to walk on its beaches at a time when only polar bears bathe. In addition, the attractions of the country are less accessible in winter. Nevertheless, it has its attractions even in the colder season. One of them is located about 110 kilometers from the city of Thessaloniki, which is connected by a direct line to Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow and Vienna. It is the Loutra Pozar thermal spa at the foot of the Voras mountain.

You can relax here in the hot springs with a temperature of 37 to 39 degrees, which are full of minerals. For relaxation, a hammam, smaller private pools or an indoor pool are available. I guess the most attractive part is the outdoor part with a large Olympic pool and two natural thermal waterfalls.

you will be surrounded by snow-covered trees and cool mountain breeze while swimming in warm thermal pools. You can also go hiking in the winter nature for beautiful views or other waterfalls. Skiing enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity of the Voras resort.

9. Hévíz, Hungary

For Slovaks, Hungary is synonymous with spa culture. Relaxing in the spas in magnificent Art Nouveau buildings such as Széchenyi and Gellért is an integral part of a visit to Budapest. For a thermal experience, it is worth going beyond the borders of the metropolis. The small Hévíz lake lies near the vast Balaton, which is one of the largest biologically active natural healing lakes in the world.

The mud on the bottom is also unique, highlighted for its anti-inflammatory effects. The water temperature in the lake does not drop below 24 °C, so it is ideal for a visit even in winter. On cold days when it is freezing, steam rises from the surface, creating a natural sauna effect. This also makes the lake seem like something from a fairy tale.

Its charm is enhanced by elegant bathhouses and other buildings from the Belle Époque period, surrounded by winter nature, shrouded in a white veil. Nearby Zalakaros is also a pleasant place to relax. You can also bathe in thermal water there, if it is family-oriented, with fun in the water and slides not only for children.
