Preparations for the holidays also include cleaning the glass containers in which we will serve drinks during family gatherings. We recommend how to clean and polish glasses, glasses or crystal decanters. We guarantee that the glass will regain its original shine.
Before the holidays, many of us plan a general cleaning. It is important to clean the glass in the kitchen from all deposits or scale. Before we put our decorative glass on the holiday table, let’s check whether it needs to be polished, dusted or unsightly spots removed. We bring you a comprehensive guide to cleaning glassware at home.
Cleaning glass from deposits
Deposits on cups and glasses most often appear as a result of washing in the dishwasher. If we do not have this device at home, but our glasses are dull and “foggy” after prolonged use, this is a sign that the culprit is hard water, which leaves unsightly streaks on the glass.
How to clean glassware from deposits?
Place the cups and glasses in a sink filled with warm water. Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to it, then immerse the glasses in water and wipe them with a sponge. In the second bowl, prepare cold water with 3 spoons of vinegar and rinse all previously washed glasses in it. Cleaning the glass with vinegar will prevent the appearance of spots and stains and will also polish the glass. After rinsing all glasses, polish them thoroughly with a microfiber cloth.
How to remove scale from glassware?
Has an unpleasant and hard-to-clean limescale appeared on your glasses and crystals? It is most often found at the bottom of glasses and is therefore difficult to remove. Fortunately, we have a cure for that.
Prepare a special mixture – mix 3 teaspoons of table salt with a glass of vinegar. Spread the mixture with your fingers on places covered with limescale deposits and leave it on for a few minutes. Then rinse it with a sponge and rinse in lukewarm water. Then polish with a microfiber cloth. Vinegar in combination with salt will remove scale deposits and give glasses and crystals a shine.
How is glass cleaned from the inside?
In bottles, decanters and vases, sediments such as the remains of drinks or flower water usually collect at the bottom. Therefore, it is necessary to clean the glass inside with a special brush. First, pour 3 teaspoons of table salt on the bottom of a narrow container, and then cover it with vinegar. Leave the mixture on for 2-3 hours and then use a bottle brush to scrub the bottom. Rinse clean glass with cold water and wipe dry with a cloth.
A cola-type drink will work similarly. Simply pour a few centimeters of the drink on the bottom of the container and let it work for at least an hour. Then thoroughly clean the bottom of the bottle with a special brush – not a trace of deposits will remain.
Cleaning glass from wax
Sometimes it happens that our candlesticks or other glass objects get dirty with candle wax. It looks unsightly, so it pays to clean them thoroughly if you want to display them again on the Christmas table. There are several ways to remove wax from glass.
- The first is freezing. Place the wax-coated glass in the freezer. After a few hours, take it out and you will see that the wax has cracked and can be easily removed with, for example, a plastic fork. Finally, just wash the glass with water and dishwashing detergent and it will shine clean again.
- The second solution is heating. Place the wax-covered glassware in a pot of hot water. A temperature of 80 to 100 degrees will melt the wax or soften it and it will be easier for us to remove it by hand.
- Another solution for removing wax from glass is soaking overnight. Place the wax-contaminated glass container in a bowl of warm water at about 50 to 60 degrees and leave it there overnight or for 24 hours. During this time, the wax should dissolve, separate from the glass and solidify in water. However, the remaining wax that has not been removed from the glass can be easily removed with an ordinary toothpick.
How can I prevent the glass from clouding?
Glass most often becomes cloudy when it is washed in the dishwasher, so pay special attention to its care.
Check the water temperature in the dishwasher. If the water is too hot, it can cook the proteins and cause the coating to become cloudy. If the water temperature is too low, it can leave an oily coating on the glass, which also looks cloudy. Clean the dishwasher regularly to prevent the formation of mineral deposits on the glassware. Before putting glassware in the dishwasher, rinse milk and milk products in advance.
Not all glassware is suitable for the dishwasher. Check it out before you put them in there.
