Young woman shot during operation in Rio de Janeiro dies days later in hospital

Ágatha Alves de Souza, aged 22, died this Friday (13), days after being shot during a police operation, in Complexo da Penha, north of Rio de Janeiro.

After being hit by gunfire on Tuesday (03) last week, the young woman was taken to the Getúlio Vargas State Hospital to be helped. After 10 days in hospital, she did not survive her injuries and died in the unit. The information was confirmed by the management of the hospital unit.

Last Sunday (8), Ágatha’s mother, Michele Almeida de Souza, shared on social media that her daughter became awake and lucid a few times during her recovery.

“I would like to thank all the people who prayed, donated, shared and were involved in some way in the recovery of Ágatha Alves de Souza, as I have wonderful news. My daughter is awake today, lucid and talking, still receiving care in the ICU, as she was extubated today. I would like to thank the entire medical and nursing team at Getúlio Vargas hospital and the heroes who took the risk of helping my daughter. Thank you all very much! Today my daughter is alive and recovering”, wrote the young woman’s mother days before her death.

When contacted, the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro (PMERJ) said, in a statement, that, on the occasion, in fact, it participated in a joint action with the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro and other states on site. According to the institution, all facts surrounding the girl’s death were being investigated.

A CNN sought contact with the state Civil Police, which is investigating the case, but received no response until the publication of this text.

Ágatha will be laid to rest and buried this Sunday (15), at the São Francisco Xavier Cemetery.
