Estonia on Sunday imposed further sanctions on Georgian political leaders in response to the country’s violent crackdown on pro-European protests. They took place there in connection with the recent parliamentary and presidential elections. TASR informs about it according to the report of the press agency DPA.

Persons listed on the sanctions list will not be allowed to travel to Estonia

Tallinn’s interior ministry said sanction measures had been imposed on another 14 people responsible for suppressing the protests. Among them is Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobachidze. Persons listed on this sanctions list will not be able to travel to Estonia, DPA reports.

“The violence used by the Georgian authorities against protesters, journalists and opposition leaders is unacceptable, criminal and contrary to human rights,” said Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.

“I call on all the countries of the European Union to respond to what is happening in Georgia and to introduce concrete measures against those who use disproportionate force and brutal violence against the Georgian people and undermine democracy,” he added.

Estonia has previously imposed sanctions on 11 members of the Georgian leadership. After Kobachidze’s decision to postpone accession talks with the EU until the end of 2028, protests broke out in the streets of the capital Tbilisi and elsewhere in Georgia in late October.

The protests are also focused on the disputed parliamentary elections, which took place at the end of October and in which the ruling party Georgian Dream was re-elected. Hundreds of protesters were arrested and several people were injured.

Further protests broke out after Saturday’s presidential election, in which the Georgian Dream candidate and former football representative Micheil Kavelashvili was elected.
