Lula is discharged and will leave hospital, says medical team

The president is expected to leave Sírio Libanês, in São Paulo, this Sunday (Dec 15); he had been hospitalized since Tuesday (Dec 10)

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) was discharged and will leave the Sírio hospital-Lebanesein São Paulo, this Sunday (Dec 15, 2024). The information was confirmed by the Chief Executive’s personal doctor Ana Helena Germoglio during a conversation with journalists this morning.

“Due to the situation, the recovery of our patient, which was extremely better than expected, to my happiness and that of the entire team, the president is discharged from hospital”, he said to Sprout.

After discharge, the president must stay in São Paulo for a few days, and when he goes to Brasília, he will have restrictions on his schedule. For the next 15 days, you will not be able to do physical activities, only “to stroll”. International travel is prohibited, but short flights are permitted.

O dr. Roberto Kalil Filho, from Hospital Sírio Libanês, reinforced “Lula is discharged from hospital, not medically discharged.”

Doctors from the hospital participated: cardiologist Roberto Kalil Filho, neurologist Rogério Tuma, neurosurgeon Marcos Stávale and the president’s doctor, Ana Helena Germoglio.

The president has undergone 2 head procedures since December 10, 2024, when he was hospitalized. One was called cranial trepanation and the other called middle meningeal artery embolization. According to the latest medical bulletin released on Saturday (Dec 14), Lula would be “lucid and oriented, eating and walking”.

CHRONOLOGY OF THE LULA OPERATION

Below, 79-year-old Lula’s trip to São Paulo (approximate times):

  • 9.dez.2024 – Lula feels uncomfortable and leaves a meeting on parliamentary amendments with the presidents of the Chamber, (PP-AL), and the Senate, (PSD-MG) held at Palácio do Planalto, in Brasília. The PT member informs his personal doctor, Roberto Kalil Filho, around 15h who has headaches;
  • 9.dez.2024 – the president goes to the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in the federal capital and undergoes 2 tests, a CT scan and an MRI. They decide to take the PT member to the São Paulo unit;
  • 9.dez.2024 – the presidential plane with Lula on board takes off from Brasília at 23h08;
  • 10.dez.2024 – lands in São Paulo at 0h24;
  • 10.dez.2024 – Lula is undergoing surgery (understand how it went in the infographic below) which lasted around 3 hours;
  • 10.dez.2024 – to the 4hthe president’s health status is announced;
  • 10.dez.2024 – the president’s doctor informs that Lula is in the ICU (intensive treatment unit). President in the brain and his neurological functions are preserved;
  • 11.dez.2024 – statement released to 12h that the president remains with a drain to prevent further bleeding in the head, but had a good immediate postoperative evolution;
  • 11.dez.2024 – after saying that, the medical team informs the 16h30 than Lula on Thursday (Dec 12), at 7am, to stop the flow in an artery that irrigates the membrane that covers the brain, the meninges.
  • 12.dez.2024 – Lula undergoes the procedure around 7h. Shortly after 8hdoctor Roberto Kalil Filho that the procedure was successful;
  • 12.dez.2024 – the medical team claims that Lula is and that at the beginning of the week of December 16th;
  • 12.dez.2024 – to the Poder360Roberto Kalil Filho that, if Lula bleeds again, a bigger operation is on the radar;
  • 12.dez.2024 – in recovery, the president of children and grandchildren and for minister Rui Costa (Casa Civil) to be updated on the government’s agenda in Congress;
  • 12.dez.2024 – new medical bulletin 19h states that Lula, but remains in the ICU;
  • 13.dez.2024 – doctors in the morning, at 11:20 a.m.that the PT member left the ICU and is now under semi-intensive care;
  • 13.dez 2024 – Lula in the Sírio-Libanês corridor alongside doctor Marcos Stavale, neurosurgeon responsible for the cranial trepanation on Tuesday (Dec 10), in a video published on social media. It’s possible in the PT member’s mind.

LULA’S HEALTH

Lula will be 81 when he ends his 3rd term as head of the Palácio do Planalto. He is already the oldest president of Brazil and frequently in interviews and public statements indicates that he intends to run in the next presidential election, in 2026.

The Chief Executive has “70 years old, energy of 30 and horny of 20”.

The craniotomy was carried out on Tuesday (Dec 10) after a cerebral hemorrhage was found due to what Lula suffered when he cut his toenail in the bathroom of the Palácio da Alvorada, his official residence in Brasília, in October this year.

Before that, in 2023, the president was hospitalized for the junction of the femur bone with the hip. On that occasion, he took the opportunity to have plastic surgery and removed excess skin around his eyes.
