The palace gang was mean to the vice president, by forcing the pretense that he didn’t need to hand over the position before . Palatians are like that, they are terrified of the idea of the monarch being replaced. In an extreme case, just look at the list of those indicted for the 2022/2023 coup.
If Alckmin did not need to take over, under what condition was he called, on Monday, to receive the Prime Minister?
The palace palaces of 2024 reprized a bad film from the last century. It was the sunset and the clique lost its stop.
In the early afternoon of September 18, 1981, President João Baptista Figueiredo was in Rio and was doing gymnastics when he fell ill. An ambulance took him to the Hospital dos Servidores do Estado. The palace team commanded the operation, and he entered on a stretcher, with his face covered.
At 63 years old, Figueiredo was a wreck, but he pretended to be an athletic cavalryman. Cardiac patient, he had chronic conjunctivitis and a broken spinal column. The general who headed the National Information Service wrote a note stating that the president “suffered a slight indisposition” and in the hospital “a slight cardiovascular disorder was noted.” Everything was a lie, the president had a heart attack.
Going to the heart of the problem, the Presidency spokesperson ruled out the need for his temporary replacement. He was accompanied by the general who occupied the Ministry of Education. The vice-president was the civilian Aureliano Chaves, former governor of Minas.
The day ended without Aureliano being called. Fear hovered over the country that the 1969 crisis would be repeated, when the palace clique hid President Costa e Silva’s ischemia, prevented the inauguration of the civilian Pedro Aleixo and placed a Military Junta in power.
Brazil escaped this crisis through the work and grace of the head of the Civil House, professor João Leitão de Abreu. He was in Porto Alegre, disembarked in Rio, listened to the doctors taking care of the president and spoke with the military ministers.
Twenty-four hours after Figueiredo’s arrival at the hospital, it was the Minister of the Army, General Walter Pires, who broke the news: Aureliano would assume the Presidency, as “this vice-president not taking over is a tradition that has to be broken” .
Lula’s relationship with Alckmin is one of cordial loyalty, but a palace is a palace. Pettiness prevented a demonstration of normality. Lula 3.0 was missing a Leitão de Abreu.
This silent gaucho was one of the characters who went through history, erasing his own trail. Former Supreme Minister, he headed the Civil Cabinet of two generals. He avoided Figueiredo’s missteps, disqualified his candidacy for the Presidency, paved the way for the indirect election of Tancredo Neves and returned to Porto Alegre, to drink his beer and support Grêmio.
Lula as patient
With his medical history, if Lula were an ordinary patient, he would have had the CT scan scheduled for Friday, the 6th. He would have escaped the headaches he felt in the following days and the emergency room on Tuesday.
Again, if Lula were an ordinary patient, he wouldn’t get on a plane for a month.
O paciente Winston Churchill
Since the time of the pharaohs, monarchs have disliked bad news.
English Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874-1965), a giant of the 20th century, had a stroke in 1949 and the episode was skillfully hidden. A year later, he didn’t feel well and asked his doctor:
“Am I going to have another stroke?”
Sir Charles Watson, who would become Lord Moran, replied, without saying much:
“You get arterial spasms when you’re really tired.”
Churchill ended the conversation:
“You mustn’t scare me.”
In 1953 he had another stroke, again wearing makeup. Leão continued as prime minister until 1955 and died at the age of 90, ten years later.
