After spending hours in silence, the former president () questioned in the early evening of this Saturday (14) the arrest of the general, who was a minister in his government and running mate in the 2022 election.
At the end of the morning, after the general’s arrest, Bolsonaro published a post on social media, but did not address the issue. The text published on X (formerly Twitter) talks about the actions of his government.
Shortly before 8 pm, however, the former president made a new publication on the social network questioning the arrest of his former minister.
“More than 10 days ago the ‘Inquiry’ was concluded by the PF, indicting 37 people and forwarded to the MP [Ministério Público]. How can someone today be arrested for obstructing investigations that have already been completed?” he asked.
The former vice president of, also general Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS), wrote this Saturday that the arrest of is a “trampling of legal norms” in Brazil.
Mourão, who is a senator and a retired Army general, also stated that Braga Netto “does not represent any risk to public order”.
Since the PF’s investigations into the 2022 coup plot were released, the former vice president has spoken out to try to minimize what happened.
In November, after more than 30 people were involved in the coup plot, Mourão spoke out.
Braga Netto was charged with obstruction of justice in an action involving the investigation into the 2022 coup d’état attempt to prevent the inauguration of President Lula (PT).
According to the Federal Police, the operation aimed to fulfill warrants linked to people who “would be hindering the free production of evidence during the criminal procedural investigation”, in order to prevent the repetition of illicit conduct.
The institution announced that it was complying with court orders issued by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) determining, in addition to the general’s preventive detention, two search and seizure warrants and a precautionary measure other than arrest against these people.
Braga Netto was Minister of Defense and vice-president on Bolsonaro’s ticket in 2022. According to the Federal Police, he participated in two groups that planned the coup d’état that involved, in 2022, the then elected president, (), the vice-president, (), and the minister, of .
The PF also claims that the plan to kill the president was discussed at Braga Netto’s house. The Army defined that the reserve general will be detained in the barracks of the 1st Army Division, in . The military’s defense has not yet commented on what happened.
