The operation that led to , retired general and candidate for vice president on a defeated ticket in 2022, opened a new chapter in attempts to elucidate and hold accountable figures linked to the coup plan to end the government.
The repercussion of this case in more than 90 thousand public groups monitored by the Palver platform revealed a scenario of intense reactions, conflicting narratives and conspiracy theories.
Palver’s analysis found that his arrest became a central topic of political debate.
On October 13th and 14th, mentions of e fell 28% and 20%, respectively, while references to general jumped 2,697%.
In the total terms analyzed, Braga Netto accounted for 36% of all mentions, surpassing Lula (32%), Bolsonaro (22%) and Moraes (8%). In total, the topic reached 475 thousand users in the monitored groups, indicating the intensity and scope of the digital repercussion.
The narrative constructed by some left-wing groups celebrates what happened as a historic and ironic moment, highlighting the coincidence of the arrest on the birthday of former president Dilma Rousseff and shortly after a “Friday the 13th” with PT symbolism.
In these spaces, the plot is treated as a “perfect script” of poetic justice, reinforcing the idea that democracy is triumphing over supposed authoritarian plots.
On the other hand, among right-wing supporters and supporters of Bolsonarism, indignation and accusations of political persecution predominate.
There are those who see the prison as a “theater” created by “equipped” institutions – the Federal Police and the Lula government – to wear down Bolsonaro and his circle of allies, undermining the credibility of the right.
In these groups too, conspiracy theories spread quickly.
Among them, the FBI’s alleged participation in the operation since January 8, Lula’s hospitalizations and surgeries considered “false” and a “judicial dictatorship” that would be censoring the right. Doubtful links, anonymous profiles and unverified content circulate to support these claims.
While part of the left sees the episode as a sign of progress in clarifying the coup plots, sectors of the right claim that Braga Netto’s arrest would be just a step towards Bolsonaro’s arrest.
This expectation intensifies the climate of tension, whether among those who expect the former president to be held accountable, or among those who fear a legal siege that could reach the “hard core” of Bolsonarism.
In the messages, the appeal continues for Bolsonaro supporters not to give up, reinforcing hashtags, publishing content favorable to the former president and classifying every institutional action against right-wing figures as “injustice”.
The general’s arrest is thus framed in the context of an ongoing battle, in which networks like WhatsApp play a strategic role in mobilizing and disseminating narratives.
The messaging ecosystem, conducive to the proliferation of conspiracy theories, unproven accusations and manipulated versions, intensifies polarization and hinders a solid public debate.
In this context, continuous monitoring of social networks, combined with cooperation with digital platforms, is essential to mitigate the consequences of this misleading content.
By investing in mechanisms for detecting, verifying and blocking coordinated disinformation campaigns, it becomes possible to reduce exposure to false information and expand the space for a more constructive, fact-based dialogue.
