Conmebol released the updated ranking of clubs on the continent. The list will be used to determine the pots that each team will be placed in during the Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana draws. The preliminary matches will be defined this Thursday (19).
Back in the Libertadores after 35 years, Bahia appears in 77th position. With this, the tricolor already knows that it will be in pot 2 of the draw for the pre-Libertadores phase and, in theory, will face a stronger opponent who comes from pot 1.
Among the more traditional clubs that the Squadron can face are Boca Juniors (Argentina), Cerro Porteño (Paraguay), Barcelona (Ecuador) and Santa Fe (Colombia).
In addition to the chance to face a stronger opponent, being in pot 2 the Squadron will have to decide their place in the third phase away from home. The base dates established by Conmebol for the duels in the second phase of the pre-Libertadores are February 19th (outbound) and 26th (return).
UNDERSTAND PRE-LIBERATORS
The pre-Libertadores is divided into three phases. In the first, six clubs face each other in a round-trip system and the three classified go to pot 2 of the second phase.
Brazilian and Argentine clubs enter the competition from the second phase, which is made up of 16 teams. The bracket is defined by draw and once again the clashes take place in round-trip games. At this stage, clubs from the same country do not face each other.
To reach the group stage of the Libertadores, Bahia needs to go through both knockout stages. The Squad also needs to go through at least one of the qualifiers to avoid running the risk of being left without an international calendar.
