How to properly freeze bread. Many people make a fundamental mistake

Pastry is the foundation. Thanks to it, you can prepare a hearty breakfast, snack and dinner. How to freeze it if you don’t have the possibility to buy it fresh all the time?

Having a cottage in nature is a pleasure. But until your stomach starts growling and you don’t have a chance to buy some food supplies at the convenience store (or the local colonial). “The nearest convenience store is five kilometers away and closes at five. If my husband and I get hungry late, we don’t stand a chance,” says (as the “spoiled” Pražačka herself says) Klára: “You know, it’s a change, because in the city we have a convenience store near our house that is open until eleven. If I forget something, I jump in there and I’m done. But here? I have to plan everything and I prefer to buy baked goods in stock and freeze them.’

Pastries in stock

There are a lot of weekend cottagers in a situation like Klára’s. Are you among them? Then we have good news for you. According to experts, freezing baked goods is a great solution. You just have to follow certain rules so that your supply of bread or rolls is tasty even on the second try.

What are the measures? “Always put bread in the freezer that is fresh but not warm or lukewarm. Always cut it into slices and freeze it in portions that you are able to consume immediately,” recommends the expert, adding that re-freezing the pastry is not advisable.

Bet on packaging

Use resealable freezer bags when storing baked goods in the freezer. On the one hand, it does not let in air, but also various microorganisms that could impair the quality of the baked goods. Your bread will last about six months in good quality in this “freezer safe”.

By then you should use it up. “When defrosting, just take the slices out onto the table and let them soften gradually at room temperature,” advises the expert, adding that if you are very hungry, you can let the slices soften in a warm oven. The only downside is that you have to use them right away because they harden quickly.

The Roll (and Bun) Saga

If you prefer white bread, the freezer will not disappoint you either.
“You can freeze rolls or buns wrapped in foil. This aluminum jacket will prevent your “breakfast portion” of pastries from being dry and tasteless. The foil has one more advantage – you can put the individual pieces straight into the oven and let them heat up. They will be wonderfully crunchy!

A chance for sweet spots too

Do you have buns or a piece of Christmas left over? Then wrap them in foil and freeze. But beware – no filling, no sugar sprinkles! Within three months, you have the chance to thaw them and enjoy them in their full flavor and suppleness.
