Illegal trade generates R$ 4.5 billion in Rio de Janeiro

The illegal market generates R$ 4.5 billion per year in the metropolitan region of Rio, according to research released on December 9 by the Fecomércio Institute of Research and Analysis of the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of Rio de Janeiro . According to , the number exceeds by around R$1 billion the total purchases made on all commemorative dates, such as Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Children’s Day, as well as Black Friday and Easter.

The survey, which interviewed 981 consumers from the metropolitan region on the 13th, 14th, 21st and 22nd of November, was presented at the last meeting this year of the Council to Combat the Illegal Market of Fecomércio-RJ.

According to the study, 55.2% of those interviewed reported that they had already purchased products from illegal stores at least once in their lives. The average monthly expenditure on purchasing these products is R$129. The estimated financial turnover per month is R$376.7 million, says the survey.

The survey also indicated that 67.9% of consumers consider that purchasing products from the informal market negatively impacts the State’s economy. Despite this, the influence of these losses is not limited to the direct economic effect. For 64% of those interviewed, the acquisition favors an increase in crime and violence.
