Netanyahu called Syria a longtime enemy of Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that he discussed the situation in Syria with future US President Donald Trump and confirmed Israel’s peace intentions in the region in their conversation. This was reported by the DPA agency, from which TASR took over the report.
“We have no interest in the conflict in Syria,” Netanyahu said in his press statement. “We will adjust Israel’s policy in Syria according to the current situation in the neighboring country.”
Netanyahu referred to Syria as a long-standing “actively hostile state” that repeatedly attacked Israel and allowed third parties to conduct hostile activities against Israel. “It allowed Iran to arm Hezbollah through its territory. To ensure that this does not happen again, we are undertaking a series of steps,” said the Israeli prime minister.
Since the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Israel has intensified its military activities in Syria and is carrying out airstrikes on military targets in the annexed Golan Heights. Israel’s government also approved a plan to increase the population of the Golan Heights on Sunday, insisting it has no intention of confronting Syria after occupying the UN-supervised buffer zone.
