The minister Alexandre de Moraesfrom the Federal Supreme Court (STF), extended for another 180 days the “fake news” investigation, which investigates an alleged criminal group that would aim to attack ministers of the Court.
According to the STF’s press office, the investigation was extended to “finalize the investigations into proving the existence, financing and modus operandi of the ‘hate office’, as well as all its participants”.
According to the STF, the hearing of another 20 people was also determined and “the complementation of the analysis of the information obtained through the breach of tax and banking secrecy and the end of the various investigations underway at the Federal Police”.
The investigation was opened in 2019 and is being conducted in secret.
Last week, the president of the Supreme Court, Luís Roberto Barroso said that the fake news inquiry was “atypical”, but “necessary and indispensable to confront extremism in Brazil”.
In the minister’s assessment, the investigation should still continue until 2025 in light of the investigation into the alleged attempted coup d’état involving former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
