On the first day of the telephone pre-screening model, most pregnant women who appeared in the emergency rooms of the Lisbon maternity hospital did not meet the requirement. Some didn’t even know about the new rule in force.

“Most of the ladies went to the emergency room without having previously called Saúde 24, but they did what they did here contact already in our emergency”, explains the nurse Fernando Prada, from Maternidade Alfredo da Costa.
The pilot project wants it to be like this for everyoneand will advance if it goes well.
“Right now, it’s a three-month project. We will do a weekly assessment at first and then monthly, to truly see what this triagem will bring us”, says Ana Fatela, deputy clinical director of Maternidade Alfredo da Costa.
Dpatients arriving at this emergency30% are considered little or not urgent. Em mediaare received, per day, 70 women. The intended objective is reduce the influx and waiting times.
