Vélez Sarsfield took the Argentine Championship title this Sunday by beating Huracán 2-0 and winning the national trophy for the eleventh time in history. With winning the cup, Vélez received a prize of 500 thousand dollars, around R$3 million at current prices. The value is much lower compared to the Brazilian Championship prize.
Botafogo, champion of the Brazilian Championship this 2024 season, pocketed the amount of R$48.1 million for the title of the straight points tournament. Runner-up Palmeiras, in turn, added R$45.7 million to its coffers.
Vélez Sarsfield’s prize was even lower than the amount received by Red Bull Bragantino. The team from São Paulo was in sixteenth place in the table, the first outside the relegation zone. Still, he earned R$16.3 million from the Brazilian Football Confederation.
The amount acquired by Vélez Sarsfield would pay, for example, one month of Memphis Depay’s salary at Corinthians. At the black and white club, the Dutchman receives R$2.9 million per month. The value, however, could exceed R$3 million, taking into account other awards and participation in marketing actions.
The Argentine Championship’s prize money is based on the tournament’s commercial revenue. The AFA (Argentine Federation) prevents foreign investment in the country’s football. In this scenario, as the league attracts fewer investors and sponsors, prize money is lower.
